Web Hosting Basics  What is SSL?

SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. It is the web standard for encrypting (securing) data transferred via the Internet. The most common use of SSL is to secure web site payment pages where credit card information may be entered to complete a transaction. By encrypting the data entered through the use of SSL you can prevent hackers from stealing that data. If you ever buy something on the Internet chances are you went through several pages in the checkout process that were secured by SSL. A good way to determine if the page you are on is secured by SSL is to pay close attention to the URL in your address bar. SSL secured pages typically start with "https:" rather than the standard "http:". Another way to pickup whether a page is SSL secured is the behavior of the browser you are using. Many browsers will signify a secured page with a padlock icon.

Many web hosting providers will offer you a shared SSL certificate which simply means they have obtained a certificate to make web pages secure and will share that certificate with you in order for you to be able to provide secure pages within your sales process as well. This usually requires redirecting users to the provider's web address where the SSL pages are to complete your sales process, but can be done subtly so your visitors never know they temporarily left your site. You may also obtain your own certificate from a certificate authority and therefore secure pages on your site without re-directing to your hosting providers pages. Most web hosting companies that offer e-commerce web hosting will also step you through either sharing their SSL certificate or help you obtain and install your own.
